Xmas Gift Guide: 30 for 30

December 17, 2010

Today, we continue our too-late, non-denominational holiday (Christmas) gift guide.  I will present you with a few gift options at multiple price-points.  Some may chose view this as a cheap way for me to generate multiple posts in a short time-frame or a transparent attempt to tell loved ones what to buy me.  You know what I call those people?  My wife.  Anyway…

ESPN Films 30 for 30 gift set Vol 1

ESPN’s 30 for 30 is an ambitious project.  The WWL tasked thirty filmmakers to create documentaries for each year of the network’s existence.  This box set contains the first 15 features.  I haven’t seen all of them, but with the exception of one which will go unnamed *coughTysonVsTupaccough*, every one I’ve seen has been compelling.

This volume contains a few truly remarkable docs like No Crossover: The trial of Allen Iverson from the directors of Hoop Dreams and The Band That Wouldn’t Die from Barry Levinson.  Like all good documentaries, these should appeal to even those without a vested interest in the subject matter.

Alden 405 "Indy" Boot $435

These are arguably the finest American-made boots on the market.  Some people may not like the styling, but if they’re good enough for Henry Walton Jones Jr, PhD, they’re good enough for me.

Barbour Quilted Shirt Jacket $140

The website lists the cost as $140 Canadian, which I thought was equivalent to 79 cents, but apparently the US economy sucks and the dollar is weak.  Who knew?

$16.50 at Amazon

I’ve already made my feelings about FreeDarko known on this site.  I can also add that Bethlehem Shoals is a great guy to work with…not that this will make this book any more enjoyable.  Still, anyone with even the slightest passing interest in basketball will really enjoy this book.

Xmas Gift Guide: Merkur Safety Razor

Today, we embark on our too-late non-denominational holiday (Christmas) gift guide.  I will present you with a few gift options at multiple price-points.  Some may chose view this as a cheap way for me to generate multiple posts in a short time-frame or a transparent attempt to tell loved ones what to buy me.  You know what I call those people?  My wife.  Anyway…

Merkur Stainless Steel Safety Razor $51

I’ve said it before, but wet-shaving with a safety razor is the way to go.  I used to do it every now and then as a luxury, and use one of those futuristic 12-blade razors on most other days.  Now the safety razor is the only one I use.  Wet shaving takes longer but provides an incomparable close shave.

A big part of wet shaving’s effectiveness is due to the use of the badger brush to lift the hairs, and copious amounts of hot water to soften the whiskers, but the blade itself plays a big part.  Most blades in disposable razors aren’t actually sharp enough to cut hairs, so there’s a lot of pulling and tearing.  The razors used for wet shaving actually cut the hair, causing less skin irritation.

Safety razors are also great for guys who suffer from razor bumps.  Ever see those commercials, where they show one blade lifting the hair, and another cutting it?  That’s a big cause of razor bumps.  The hair is cut below the skin line.  For guys with curlier hair, those shorn whiskers sometimes curl under the skin, causing unsightly, painful razor bumps.

Plus, you and I both know they look cool on the sink.
